Final Blog Post

My overall project was to create a game level using UDK(Unreal Development Kit) which was started in week 2 and completed now. This was my first time using the engine so there was a learning curve.

Here is a breakdown of what I accomplished

  • Week 2 I created a terrain
  • Week 3 I designed some buildings and rooms
  • Week 4 I added the main character and the AI
  • Week 5 I added pick up items for the player in this case it was a bucket and mushrooms
  • Week 6 I added rain
  • Week 7 I added a cinematic scene

I accomplished everything that I set out in my project plan. This project taught me about emerging technologies, I learned that software is available and advanced enough for an individual to be able to create a level or even a complete game by them-self in a short time period. Managing time was very important in dealing with a project involving emerging technologies because it took time to learn everything and if I didn't I would have been behind schedule and would not have completed my game level. I had fun doing this project and I think that I would like to apply my skills towards level design in the game and simulation field.

Week 7 Sunday

I have completed my project for the course And the video shows my final level.

Week 7 Update Friday

I have added rain and rain sounds to my level. The rain sounds play perfectly but I am having trouble with getting the rain to display all across the level not just in certain spots. I have two videos showing what I have done so far.

Week 6 Saturday

Today I accomplished a lot I got some of the UI such as health ammo and map to show by changing the world properties in UDK The AI is now visiable and shoots at the player when it sees it as demonstrated in the video. I plan on adding a few more AI bots.

Week 6 Friday

This week's goal is to use particle effects and begin starting a user interface for the game.

I plan doing rain for a particle effect and maybe something else if I have more time.

So far I have my rain material pictured below that I will import in my level.

Week 5 2nd Post

I got the player to be able to pick up the objects(mushrooms/bucket) I still haven't implemented them in  for scoring. I also had time to fix the AI. The problem I ran into the earlier week was that I added to many AI bots before checking to see if one would work.

This video shows AI firing at the main player as well as the player collecting the objects throughout the level.

Week 5 blog post

This week my plan is to add objects for the player to collect. Right now in the level the objects the player can collect are a bucket and mushrooms I still have to code them so they can be added to the score. Also I plan on having a little free time so I will continue working on the AI.

This is the bucket and mushrooms I added for the player to collect.

Week 4 Sunday

This involves the first AI bot. First I loaded the level, Set the AI Spawn point and connected the two events together which basically creates an AI bot at that path when the level starts.

This next sequence moves the AI to the other paths set up in the level

This is the video with my bot in first person walking through the level I had problems getting the AI to show up.

Week 4 Saturday

Today I was able to get the main playable character in the level. Tomorrow's goal is to get some AI bots in the level through kismet which is where you script events in UDK.

Week 2 Monday

This week I am starting my main project for the class. I am building a video game level using UDK which is the Unreal Development Kit. I haven't worked with UDK that much so it like learning something new. I plan on using some tutorials I found and using the documentation site for help.

This is the terrain I started. I added grass material to it.

Wired.com Starter post

In innovative display technology, I am really interested in the Displair, which is an air display. It uses water vapors to create a moving display and whatever is on your tablet or computer is projected on the display. Users can interact with the Displair just as they would any touchscreen. The Displair also has a camera which can pick up movements and users can also interact with it that way. It doesn't appear that the Displair will be for consumers at this point because of the price ($15,000). It is expected to be used by advertisers for now.

One of the newest innovations of gaming is the Project Shield which is by Nvidia. It uses a controller similar to the XBOX 360 and a touch screen which is powered by the Android market. Users can stream pc games to Project  Shield using their home network. There isn't any information of how it will cost, it might depend on other future technologies. It seems like Project Shield will create a new wave for future gaming technology.

Also in technology news the game Minecraft is a good example of augmented reality. It now has an app on IOS for Iphone users were they can take their designs and put them in a really environment. Users can also share their photos with their friends.
